What's in a Name?

Steamboat Ski Resort operates on Mount Werner, formerly known as Storm Mountain, which was renamed in 1965 in honor of Buddy Werner, an Olympian from Steamboat Springs who was killed in an avalanche in Switzerland in 1964. Mt. Werner has five peaks (from lowest to highest), Christie Peak, Thunderhead Peak, Sunshine Peak, Storm Peak, and Mount Werner. One of the few hiking-only trails on Mount Werner, Thunderhead Trail provides hikers with unparalleled views of downtown Steamboat, the ski area's base, and the south valley.
